Walker's Manzanita Ranch

1834 7-31: Ranch Arroyo de las Nueces y Bolbones (Creek of the Walnuts and Bolbones Indians) or ‘Rancho Miguel’ 17,782 acres were granted to Don Juana Sanchez de Pacheco including Pine Canyon, Little Pine Canyon and the North Gate Road area, Diablo and Turtle Rock Ranche inholdings. Approximately ¼ of the land grant is within the State Park today.

1841: The first travel account of Mt Diablo was recorded by the French attaché to California; Eugene Duflot du Mofras. By 1846 American immigration to the area began.

1851: Mt Diablo meridian and survey. Colonel Leander Ransom, Deputy-Surveyor General, established the initial point of the Mt Diablo meridian at the mountain’s summit, beginning the survey of public lands in California. The hills north of the Clayton area became known as the meridian Hills (the ridge between Concord and Pittsburg). The largest and closest ranch to this point was owned by the Walker family.

1851: James Toomey Walker (1825-1902) and his family were early settlers in the Walnut Creek area. James married Mary Caroline Vaughan Walker (1840-1922) in 1861. They had three children, a son and two daughters. In 1868, he built a home on his 1,400-acre ranch (acquired in 1851). The home remains today on North Gate Road in Walnut Creek at the foot of Mount Diablo State Park. James' famous uncle, Joseph R. Walker (1798-1876), moved into the new house with his nephew and lived there until his death at the age of 77. Joseph R. Walker was a trapper, trailblazer, guide, and stock buyer of the 1830s and 1840s. Walker Pass in the Sierra Nevada is named for him. He is buried in Alhambra Cemetery in Martinez, where his headstone recounts the highlights of his career. James' son, John "Johnnie" Walker (1862-1942), remained on the ranch after his father¹s death, and continued in the cattle business for almost three decades. His herd numbered over 1,500 cattle. John married Margaret McDonald Walker in 1886. They had seven children, all born on the ranch created by James.

1853: The Pacheco family used its land for grazing cattle, but did not settle on the rancho. The Pacheco’s Mexican land grant was confirmed in 1853, and shortly thereafter, Dona Sanchez' nephew sold 6,774 acres to James Walker (nephew of Captain Joseph R. Walker), who operated a large cattle ranch in the Little Pine Creek drainage until the mid-1880s, Records from the mission period suggest that sheep were also grazed in the vicinity of Mount Diablo.

"The State Park"

Manzanita ranch circa 1890-94 is best guess based on other photos. Ranch house is still in existence, just off North Main Gate of Mt. Diablo, California.

"Photo courtesy of Jeff Forestier who wrote the following"

I am a direct descendant of Samuel Walker, who was the oldest brother that died at the Humbolt in 1850-52. His wife Barbara Toomey is the woman (Bil) Gilbert wrote as being the tough old woman sitting on the porch of Manzanita Ranch. She and Joe were extremely close friends later in life.

The above photo is taken from an area known as Heather Farms, which became the northern portion of the ranch about 1895. It is St.Ignacio Blvd today. It is the ranch my grandmother lived on as a child. The photo is toward the south with the entire undeveloped northern area of Mt Diablo. This covered the area of the ranch known as Pine Creek, Sulphur Springs, and the original Manzanita. In total the ranch covered about 13,000 acres.
